How to Care for Your Dental Implants for Long-Term Success

Dental implants are one of the most durable and natural-looking ways to restore your smile—but like natural teeth, they need proper care to last. At Orleans Dental Centre, we’re here to help you protect your investment and enjoy a lifetime of confidence with just a few daily habits and regular check-ins.

Why Implant Care Matters

Your dental implant includes:

  • A titanium post fused to the jawbone
  • An abutment (connector)
  • A custom crown, bridge, or denture

Although implants aren’t prone to decay, the surrounding gums and bone can still be affected by plaque, bacteria, and inflammation. Without care, this can lead to peri-implantitis (an infection around the implant) and eventual implant failure.

Daily Care Tips for Implant Health

Brush Twice a Day

Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste to clean your implant and the surrounding area. Electric brushes are especially effective at removing plaque without damaging your crown.

Floss Daily (Yes, Still!)

Gently floss around your implant to remove food and bacteria. Special floss, floss threaders, or water flossers can help clean around bridges and multi-unit implants.

Use Interdental Brushes or Water Flossers

For extra care around your implant, use small interdental brushes or a water flosser to gently clean the gumline.

Stay Hydrated

A healthy flow of saliva helps wash away bacteria and protect your implant. Read more about the benefits of hydrating for a healthier smile .

Don’t Skip Your Checkups

Visit us every 6 months (or as recommended) for professional cleanings and implant exams. We’ll:

  • Check the integrity of your implant
  • Monitor your gums and bone health
  • Clean areas you can’t reach at home

Avoid These Implant Risks

To keep your implant strong and stable:

  • Don’t smoke—it reduces blood flow and increases failure risk
  • Avoid hard or sticky foods that may damage the crown
  • Wear a nightguard if you grind your teeth (ask if a nightguard is right for you)
