What Is Dry Socket, and How Do You Prevent It?

After a tooth extraction, most patients heal smoothly. But sometimes, a painful complication called dry socket can occur. At Orleans Dental Centre, we’re here to guide you through your recovery with care and clarity—so you can heal comfortably and confidently.

What Is Dry Socket?

When a tooth is removed, a protective blood clot forms in the socket to support healing. Dry socket happens when this clot is dislodged or dissolves too early, exposing the underlying bone and nerves. The result? Sharp pain that often starts a few days after the procedure and may radiate to the ear or jaw.

Dry socket is most common after the removal of wisdom teeth. Learn more about wisdom teeth extractions and what to expect.

What Are the Symptoms?

  • Intense pain a few days post-extraction
  • Bad breath or an unpleasant taste in your mouth
  • Visible bone in the socket
  • Pain that radiates to the ear, temple, or neck

If you experience any of these symptoms, contact us right away. We can help relieve discomfort and protect the healing site.

How to Prevent Dry Socket

Prevention starts with proper aftercare. Here’s what you can do:

Follow Post-Op Instructions Carefully

Your dentist will provide personalized recovery guidelines. Stick to them closely for the best results.

Avoid Straws, Smoking, and Spitting

Suction and pressure can disturb the healing clot. Refrain from using straws, smoking, or forceful spitting for at least 72 hours.

Stick to Soft Foods

Stick to soft, cool foods like yogurt, mashed potatoes, and applesauce. Avoid crunchy or spicy foods that could irritate the site.

Rest and Take It Easy

Get plenty of rest and avoid vigorous activity in the days following your extraction to promote healing.
