Caring for Your Gums After Scaling and Root Planing

If you’ve recently had scaling and root planing—often called a deep cleaning—you’ve taken a big step toward reversing gum disease and restoring your oral health. At Orleans Dental Centre, we’re here to help you heal smoothly and confidently. With the right care, your gums can become healthier, stronger, and more comfortable.

What Is Scaling and Root Planing?

This non-surgical procedure removes plaque, tartar, and bacteria from below the gumline, then smooths the tooth roots to help gums reattach. It’s a powerful treatment for early to moderate gum disease.

What to Expect After Treatment

Some tenderness, mild swelling, or bleeding is normal for the first few days. You may also notice:

  • Slight tooth sensitivity (especially to cold or sweets)
  • Gum soreness where buildup was removed
  • A cleaner, smoother feeling on your teeth

Most discomfort fades within 48–72 hours. If you were prescribed antibiotics or antimicrobial rinse, be sure to follow the instructions carefully.

Post-Care Tips for Faster Healing

1. Brush and Floss Gently

Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and be gentle around treated areas. Keep brushing twice daily to prevent new buildup—but avoid aggressive scrubbing.

2. Use a Salt Water Rinse

A warm saltwater rinse (½ tsp salt in 1 cup of water) a few times daily can soothe soreness and reduce inflammation.

3. Eat Soft, Non-Irritating Foods

Stick to cool or lukewarm, soft foods for the first 24–48 hours. Avoid spicy, crunchy, or sticky items that may irritate healing tissue.

4. Avoid Tobacco and Alcohol

Both can slow healing and increase the risk of infection. If you smoke, this is a great time to take a break—your gums will thank you!

5. Keep Your Follow-Up Appointments

Regular periodontal maintenance visits are key to keeping your gums healthy and preventing future flare-ups.
